Center for Career Development & Internships

At Wilkes University, planning for successful outcomes begins the very first year. In fact, many students secure full time jobs in their field before they even graduate.

  • Through the unique Career Gateway Program, the center works with students throughout the college experience to prepare them for life after graduation.
  • Two career and internship fairs each academic year bring employers to campus to meet with students.
  • The online career website Handshake connects Wilkes students with employers looking for their particular skills.
  • The center staff will help you search and apply for internships and cooperative learning experiences that boost your resume and introduce you to potential employers.
  • Most graduates report receiving job offers within six months of graduation, working in places like PricewaterCoopers, Disney, Sanofi Pasteur and Toyota.

The Center for Career Development and Internship staff advises students in their professional goals in that, after speaking with their advisor, a student is ready now to move forward. The career gateway program is our new initiative that begins freshman year. We work with students to start to think early about their plan for their career at welcome weekend.

Because I was able to get a lot of my credits done early, I'm able to start my master's degree next semester. And with two semesters to go, I've actually already accepted a job position at Borton-Lawson.

There are many networking opportunities around campus. We have two career fairs at the University. We have a career fair in the fall and we offer another in the spring, and both have opportunities for students to meet between 80 and 100 employers.

So when I got my internship opportunity, I was better prepared to be able to go and talk to them the first time from meeting all of the different people at the career and internship fairs.

Handshake is a talent recruiting app that we use. It connects the students with employers. Handshake uses student's profile to not only allow students to search, but it matches the student's preferences to employer needs as well. So by being connected, students actually are intentionally engaged by tailoring their profiles to their majors, to their careers, and their interests.

Wilkes graduates are highly employable because of the coupling between the industry experience and the theory that is taught in class.

El programa "Career Gateway" es nuestra nueva iniciativa que comienza con el primer año. Trabajamos con alumnos para empezar a pensar temprano en su plan de carrera en un fin de semana de bienvenida. Como pude obtener muchos créditos al principio, puedo comenzar la maestría el semestre que viene. Y a dos semestres de terminar, ya acepté un trabajo en Borton-Lawson.

Hay muchas oportunidades para hacer contactos en el campus. Hay dos ferias académicas en la Universidad. Tenemos una feria académica en otoño y ofrecemos otra en primavera. Y en ambas hay oportunidades para que los estudiantes conozcan entre 80 y 100 empleadores.
