My biggest thing with choosing to come to Wilkes was the small class size. A lot of the times musical theater programs take about 60 freshmen, so the odds of getting cast or even a professor knowing you well enough to know where they need to push you, what your flaws are, what your strengths are, and how they can make you into a developed actor when you graduate-- whereas Wilkes, it's really small.
All the professors know me really well. They know my areas of strain. They know my weakness. They know what I need to do to push me in the direction that I need to go.
We're different from other theater programs because we build the sets. We do the lighting. We do everything in working towards the show. And a lot of other schools don't get that experience, and it really gives you appreciation for everything that happens backstage.
I've had a lot of roles here that have really changed me as a performer, but, to be completely honest, the one that I'm playing right now in Cabaret, Sally, has definitely changed me the most because it's such a challenge for me because I've never-- I usually play the goody two shoes and the little princess, but this is so far beyond anything I've ever done before. And it's really pushing me to boundaries that I didn't think I'd ever have to cross, and pushing me to think in ways I never thought I'd have to, and have to put myself in situations that are beyond my comprehension. And I think it's making me more of a strong actress even outside of this role because it's just a different kind of experience.
I think one of the hardest plays that we did here was The Crucible, which I was Reverend Hale in, and I really think that role helped me improve with my acting skills and helped me understand theater a lot better.
Do stage crew or run a light board because any type of experience is going to benefit you in the long run regardless if your goals are to be a lighting designer or an actor. If you are immersed in everything, odds are you're going to the best well-rounded artist there is, and I think that's what Wilkes does because, I mean, we have to learn it all.
Keep reminding yourself why you wanted to do it in the first place because it's really easy to lose sight of the love for it because it can get frustrating. And so I think it's really helpful to-- when you're getting really frustrated about the drama or about-- you're frustrated that you're not moving as quickly as you want to with your career, you really have to take moments to sit down and remind yourself why you wanted to do this. Because once you lose sight of that, it just-- it ruins everything.
Know what you want in life. Know what you want in theater because this is a very competitive field. And if your heart isn't 100% in it, it's going to be very difficult for you. But if your heart is 100% in it, then it's just about the most fun job you could ever have.
I really can't see myself doing anything else. I tried to think about it, and I just-- I couldn't.

Pero si tu corazón está al ciento por ciento en esto, entonces se convierte en el trabajo más divertido que puedas tener.
