Students can start research as soon as they come to school. Students can work with faculty in their research. And typically, they already have a team set up, so there are older students that can help mentor the younger students.
These research opportunities are useful, because they help to build relationships with many different teachers around the department. It helps later in your career, because when you have a close relationship with teachers, it's easy access to go to them, talk to them, and ask for whatever you need.
One unique opportunity at Wilkes is that you can stay over the summer to do paid research.
Wilkes pays for the student housing. There are many opportunities for them. But most importantly, a lot of the grant money that comes into Wilkes comes from the National Institute of Health and the National Science Foundation. It means a lot to students that they're really pushing students to learn research at the undergraduate level, and it's very important for us.
There are a lot of opportunities to go and present research. I got to hone in my communication skills, which a lot of time involved talking to people who were unfamiliar with the topic and helping them understand what exactly I was doing.
